The Director-General, Internal Audit Agency, Dr Oduro Osae has inaugurated the Eastern Regional Districts Audit Committees to commence their two-year turner of ensuring effective accountability and efficient use of state resources in their respective Municipal/District Assemblies on Monday 13th June 2022 at Koforidua, the regional capital. All 27 District Audit Committees whose tenure has expired out of the total 33 Assemblies in the region were inaugurated

The Audit Committees were inaugurated to fulfil their responsibilities on them under Section 86 (1) of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, (Act 921), the Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2378), the Public Procurement Act,2003 (Act 663) as amended, the guidelines for effective functioning of committees and other applicable laws.

In his address, Dr Douro Osae emphasised the importance of the committee in the governance of the District Assemblies and called for support from the Regional Minister, Municipal Chief Executive and other key stakeholders to ensure its full execution.

He said the Audit Committee at the respective districts were expected to work together with Management and all other stakeholders, emphasising that the committee should be seen as partners in the development towards accomplishing efficient management of the public funds.

The Honourable Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong indicated that the inauguration of the audit Committees was very necessary and timely because it would l help to avert the current happenings at the Public Accounts Committee, where some institutions that appeared before it was referred to the Police for arrest and possible prosecution.

He queried why it has become an ‘annual ritual’ for some Assemblies and other public institutions to appear before the Public Accounts Committee given the availability of all the control measures put in place to avert the situation.

He consequently entreated members of the committee to be firm, resolute, sincere, independent and honest in the discharge of their duties. “As Public Officer holders, you have the responsibility to protect the public purse and be accountable to the people”, he added.
