Tailors and dressmakers in the Eastern Region were encouraged on Saturday, May 10, 2025, to blend traditional sewing techniques with modern trends to stay relevant and competitive in today’s fashion industry.
Speaking at the launch of the Regional Women’s Wing of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA) in Suhum, the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, said the time has come for local artisans to evolve by combining their heritage with innovation and creativity.
She described the formation of the Women’s Wing as a bold and strategic step toward greater inclusion and leadership for women in the sector. The Minister emphasized the importance of unity among associations, encouraging them to work together proactively and support one another’s growth. She noted that in addition to building their own businesses, experienced members must also empower others by sharing knowledge, skills, and opportunities, especially with the younger generation.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to job creation, Mrs. Awatey referenced the National Apprenticeship Programme under the “Jobs for All” agenda as a pathway for many young people to receive free training, certification, and startup support. She pledged the Regional Coordinating Council’s continued support to ensure that such initiatives directly benefit artisans across the region.
She further urged members of the Association to carry themselves with professionalism and to showcase their best work with pride. According to her, true leadership in the fashion and garment sector begins with excellence, consistency, and a mindset that embraces growth. She called on the Women’s Wing to lead with vision and help elevate Ghanaian fashion both locally and beyond.
