On November 5, 2024, the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), led by the Chairman, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, continued its peace tour, engaging religious leaders, opinion leaders, and community members from the New Juaben South and North municipalities at the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly Hall. This meeting marked Day 2 of the REGSEC peace initiative, aimed at fostering unity and encouraging peaceful practices across communities as the December 2024 general elections approach. Representing the President, Hon. Acheampong, expressed their administration’s commitment to sustaining national peace.

The event commenced with a welcome address from the New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Isaac Appaw-Gyasi, who expressed gratitude to the Council for the timely engagement. Hon. Appaw-Gyasi praised Hon. Acheampong for his dedication and leadership, emphasizing that the engagement symbolized REGSEC’s commitment to building strong partnerships with religious and community leaders. He called upon all attendees to reflect on their shared role in maintaining harmony, especially as the elections drew near.

Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, affirmed the importance of preserving Ghana’s longstanding legacy of peace. Speaking on behalf of the President, he remarked, “We have inherited a nation rooted in peace, and we must not let any action or rhetoric threaten this cherished stability. Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy, but it should not incite division. Our words must promote unity and respect as we approach the elections.” He underscored that the peace tour serves as a proactive effort to engage community voices and ensure collaborative support for national security.
Hon. Acheampong further emphasized that each individual, particularly community and religious leaders, plays a critical role in shaping Ghana’s peaceful trajectory. “This initiative is about listening to the voices of the community and ensuring that Ghana’s peace, direction, and development are preserved,” he added.

Following Hon. Acheampong’s address, an open forum provided leaders the opportunity to share their thoughts, concerns, and questions. REGSEC members responded by assuring attendees of the security measures in place for the upcoming elections. Participants raised questions about police readiness, strategies to address potential disturbances, and plans for maintaining order. REGSEC officials confirmed that comprehensive security arrangements are in place and called for active support from community leaders to help maintain calm during the electoral process.

The Ghana Police Regional Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Twumasi-Ankrah, offered additional insights, stating, “Politics is a way of life, and we each have a role in preserving peace. Ghana has a legacy of unity, and it’s our collective duty to uphold it.” He assured the gathering that the police, along with other security agencies, are well-prepared to manage the elections peacefully, reiterating the force’s commitment to impartiality and vigilance throughout the election period.

The meeting concluded with a strengthened resolve among religious leaders to work together in preserving peace in New Juaben and across the region. REGSEC’s peace tour continues to serve as a crucial reminder that every community has a stake in the nation’s stability, reaffirming the need for unity as Ghana heads to the polls.
