Minister Calls for Cooperation from Traditional Authorities

February 6th 2025.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has called for guidance, cooperation, and partnership from traditional authorities to build a more prosperous, peaceful, and cohesive region. She emphasized that the strength and progress of the region depend on the unity of both formal and informal institutions and their ability to work together in a spirit of mutual respect.

Hon. Awatey made these remarks during a meeting with the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs at Kyebi. She pledged to collaborate closely with traditional leaders to address educational challenges in the region.
The Minister also called for greater local involvement in educational programs, particularly in promoting cultural education. She noted that instilling a strong sense of heritage and pride in the younger generation is crucial for preserving traditions.

She further stressed that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that festivals, which are key elements of the region’s rich cultural heritage, are well-packaged and promoted. This, she said, would not only facilitate cultural exchange but also attract both local and international visitors, driving sustainable economic growth in communities.

Hon. Awatey also appealed to chiefs to join forces with the government in tackling illegal mining (galamsey), which continues to harm the region’s natural environment.

The President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, Nene Sakite, expressed concerns over the government’s inability to adequately fund the chieftaincy institution to effectively manage chieftaincy-related issues, which are contributing to security challenges in various communities.

Nene Sakite, who is also the Konor of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, recalled that in the past, chieftaincy matters were handled solely by queen mothers, kingmakers, and royals. However, he lamented that political interference in chieftaincy affairs has become a growing concern.
He urged politicians to refrain from meddling in traditional leadership matters, stressing that the time-honored chieftaincy institution should be strengthened and respected rather than being undermined by political influence.
