The World Drug Day was commemorated in the Eastern Region on June 26, 2023, under the theme “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.” The event took place at the Apenteng Hall in Koforidua.
Representing the Honorable Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. John Donkor, the Regional Coordinating Director for the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, delivered a speech emphasizing the widespread prevalence of drug-use disorders around the world. He highlighted research findings indicating that less than one fifth of drug abusers receive treatment, and emphasized that drug users face double victimization.
Mr. Donkor pointed out the various challenges that drug users encounter, including barriers to treatment and limited access to health services for infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and tuberculosis. He expressed concern over the rapid increase in the production of dangerous and highly addictive drugs by drug traffickers, which pose significant risks to public health.
In line with the United Nations guidelines, Mr. Donkor mentioned that the government has implemented comprehensive multidisciplinary measures to address the drug problem. These measures encompass enforcement control, education and prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and coordination.
He emphasized the crucial role of parents in combating the escalating issue of drug addiction, particularly among children of various age groups. Mr. Donkor encouraged students to prioritize their studies and avoid falling victim to drug addiction, as it can jeopardize their future prospects.
Representing the Director General, SNCO Felix Yeboah, the Regional Commander of the Narcotic Control Commission highlighted on Section 3(i) of the Narcotic Control Commission Act 2020 (Act 1019) which underscores the importance of treating substance use disorder as a public health concern, urging individuals to seek timely medical and professional assistance.
SNCO Felix Yeboah urged students to resist negative peer influences that may tempt them into substance use and abuse.
Additionally, the event marked the official launch of the Drug Awareness Club in the region, aimed at promoting awareness and education surrounding drug-related issues.
