The 12th International Applied Research and Technology Fair took place on Thursday 22nd June 2023, at the Koforidua Technical University. In attendance was the Hon. Eastern Regional Minister.
The Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, in addressing the audience emphasized the importance of research, innovation, and technology transfer in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He made these remarks during the 12th International Applied Research Conference and Technology Fair held at Koforidua Technical University. The event focused on the theme “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the post-COVID Era: The role of Research, Innovation, and Technology Transfer.”
The Honorable Minister highlighted that research plays a critical role in advancing knowledge and finding solutions for the SDGs. He encouraged citizens to foster curiosity, creativity, and collaboration in their efforts to achieve the SDGs, particularly by engaging more stakeholders, including females, in the process.
The Minister emphasized the significant contribution of technology transfer to the SDGs, citing examples in various economic sectors. In the agriculture sector, for instance, technology transfer has led to the adoption of improved seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation systems. In the health sector, it has facilitated access to essential medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, and medical devices, resulting in improved health outcomes and reduced health disparities. Furthermore, technology transfer has also facilitated the adoption of cleaner production techniques and effective waste management practices.
The Minister urged the participants to patent and champion their own research findings, emphasizing the importance of utilizing research outcomes for the benefit of the Eastern Region and Ghana as a whole.
Prof. David Essumang, the Vice Chancellor of Koforidua Technical University, added that research must be upheld as a priority to effectively address and solve the challenges faced in various aspects of our lives.
The conference attendees, representing diverse institutions, departed the event imbued with a revitalized commitment to enhance the quality and impact of their research and findings.
