Construction works on the 11-kilometre Somanya-Kpong Road in the Eastern Region are expected to resume in full scale following a period of inactivity. On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, disclosed that contractors would soon return to site after a tour of the project area to assess its current state.
Works on the road, which links the key towns of Somanya, Asitey, and Kpong, began in 2024 but stalled due to funding challenges. The project has since seen little progress, raising concerns among residents and commuters.
Mrs. Awatey explained that fruitful discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to resolve the financial constraints and expedite the contractor’s return. She gave a firm assurance that the resumption of work is imminent and will bring much-needed relief to the affected communities.
She expressed concern about the dust pollution and delays, reaffirming the government’s commitment to road infrastructure as a catalyst for socio-economic development.
She also appealed to the public, especially transport operators and traders who depend on the road, to remain patient while steps are taken to resume construction.
The Minister further cautioned residents against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into roadside drains. She emphasized that the gutters are meant for drainage, not waste disposal, and warned that persistent misuse could create serious environmental and flooding challenges. She urged the public to adopt responsible waste management practices to protect community health and infrastructure.
In an interview, Mr. Billy Brigham Deku, the Project Manager at Generals Construction Limited, the firm in charge of the project, confirmed that funding constraints were the primary cause of the delays. However, he expressed optimism that ongoing engagements with the government would soon lead to a resumption of full-scale work on the road.
