On Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, the Ghana Digital and Innovation Week (GDIW), organized by the Jokoem Consulting Group, took place at the GNAT Hall, Koforidua. The event brought together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and showcase the role of digital transformation in driving development across the Eastern Region
The event was chaired by Nana Twumasi Dankwa, the Gyaasehene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, who represented Daasebre Kwaku Boateng II, Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area. Nana Twumasi Dankwa, in his acceptance statement, emphasized on the transformative power of technology in today’s world, stating that digital innovation has become a driving force in almost every facet of life. He noted that it was vital for the region to embrace and stay ahead in the digital space, as it would strengthen local development, improve efficiency in businesses, and foster regional competitiveness.
The Eastern Regional Director of Jokoem Consulting Group, Mr. Joseph Adjei, in his welcome address highlighted the role that digital transformation plays in fostering entrepreneurship and development within the region. He underscored the importance of equipping the youth and entrepreneurs with the skills and tools necessary to harness the potential of digital technologies. Mr. Adjei also acknowledged the presence Ms. Stella Panwum (Head of Administration, Eastern Regional Coordinating Council), and Mr. David Ofori (Director of Innovations, National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme).
Representatives from Koforidua Technical University (KTU) and All Nations University, Koforidua, were present to share insights on the application of data science and governance for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Students from senior high schools in the region, including, Pope John, Mamfe Methodist Girls,’ New Juaben and Koforidua Secondary Technical, showcased their impressive technological innovations. Projects on display included, electro-hydro dynamic systems, electric drones, and circuit board timers, denoting the creativity, digital know-how and technical capabilities of the youth.
The keynote address was delivered on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, by the Head of Administration at the Eastern Regional Co-ordinating Council, Ms. Stella Panwum. The Hon. Regional Minster emphasized the need for the region to fully embrace digital transformation to remain relevant in the fast-evolving global landscape. He outlined the government’s commitment to strengthen the digital ecosystem in Ghana through various initiatives, such as the establishment of more Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) schools and revamping of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP). These initiatives are aimed at empowering MSMEs and fostering an entrepreneurial culture that thrives on digital innovation.
Elaborating on the theme, “Innovate Together: Collaborating for Digital Transformation and Impact,” Ms. Panwum stressed on the need for collaboration, between the government, private sector, and academia, to unlock the full potential of digital innovation. She reiterated the importance of partnerships, capacity building, and knowledge sharing in creating a digitally literate and innovative workforce that can drive sustainable development.
The event also featured presentations that focused on various aspects of digital transformation and its impact on MSMEs. Dr. Kwesi Hughes from KTU led an engaging session on the application of data science and governance for MSMEs, to gain insights into market trends, customer behavior, and overall business performance. His presentation highlighted the importance of data collection and organization for small businesses, with tools such as, spreadsheets, databases, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM).
Mr. Walter Dzimeya, representing GIZ, spoke on capacity building within the context of the gig economy. He discussed both the advantages and challenges of this emerging economic model and stressed the need for businesses to adapt to the ever-changing nature of work in a digital age.
Government’s partnership with international organizations such as GIZ, as well as local stakeholders, like the Ghana Hubs Network and Impact Investing, was highlighted as crucial to driving digital transformation in the region. These collaborations have led to various programs aimed at supporting start-ups, empowering MSMEs, and building resilient digital infrastructure across the country.
The Ghana Digital and Innovation Week 2024 was a resounding success, leaving participants with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to embracing digital transformation. From thought-provoking speeches to the inspiring student projects and the insightful presentations, the event underscored the importance of innovation, collaboration, and capacity building in driving the region’s development.
As the event concluded, stakeholders were reminded of the immense opportunities that digital transformation offers and the need for continued investment in technology, education, and partnerships to ensure the Eastern Region remains competitive in the digital economy.
