PROFILE

In 1915, the Department of Parks and Gardens started as a hardening station for assorted plants in Aburi Botanical Gardens which was established in 1890. Following the earthquake in 1939, the outfit was used to plant ornamental trees across the regions.

Currently, the department is responsible for the formulation, development, implementation, and promotion of landscape beautification; and the creation of awareness of environmental issues across the region.

MISSION

The mission of the Department is to facilitate the rapid development of the horticultural potentials of Ghana for the benefit of the people through public education, effective landscape beautification, efficient maintenance programmes, conservation of plants, and collaborating with stakeholders including the use of competent and well-motivated staffs, and modern technology to offer excellent customer service to the satisfaction of clients.

FUNCTIONS

Functions of the Department include:

  • Development and promotion of effective landscape beautification of cities, towns and private properties
  • Maintain and sustain the landscape beauty of the built and natural environment.
  • Cultivate or propagate horticultural plants for sale.
  • Give advice to the general public on horticultural issues.
  • Maintain prestige areas in cities and towns.
  • Develop and promote medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • Produce natural wreaths bouquets and other floristry produce for sale.
  • Regulation of pruning and felling of trees in urban areas.
  • Promotion of floriculture, Olericulture, and pomology in urban settings.

PARTNERSHIP

The Department collaborates with other governmental and/or private institutions in areas like creation of commercial activities of large-scale production and exportation of horticultural products; and creation of leisure or eco-parks. Other areas are production and exportation of tea and medical plants.
